Batters need backlift!
Around the Academy:

England's James Foster demonstrates the correct backswing

You take a look at most batsmen as the bowler approaches and watch what their blade is up to.

Taking the bat back correctly sets you up for playing the shot properly.

Check out the steps above for a few tips on what to do.

The bat is taken back towards the stumps and at the top of the backswing the face of the bat will open towards point.

The bat and hands remain in line with the shoulders.

Hands stay close to the back hip, so that toe of the bat is at around shoulder height.

Keep your head still and your eyes on the ball.
