Hungry for runs with Alec Stewart

I've always worked hard on my fitness and been a fussy eater.

But cricket has seen a huge improvement in its approach to fitness and diet, particularly in the last five years.

Watch my story in video

Still though, there is always room for further improvement.

I'll usually have cereals and toast on the morning of game, but after that it depends if I'm batting. You've got to get your carbohydrates and your proteins back into your body.

Make sure you don't dehydrate so get plenty of fluids, get plenty of sleep and make sure you are fresh for the job in hand.

Have some of that!
I'm quite sad because I enjoy training to be honest.

I'm reasonably lucky because I'm naturally athletic but if you want to stay at the top you've got to work hard.

It's not just about talent - you've got to work hard as well.

You've got to put in the hours off the field so that when you are on the field you produce the results that keep you there.

But if you have an enjoyment and a love for the game then you are going to work at it and enjoy it that much more.

It's hard work but it's a great career. I've had 20 odd years playing professional cricket and I wouldn't have swapped it for anything.

Do things your way and leave nothing to chance. There's nothing worse than finishing your career and thinking 'if only'. So do it your way, give it your best shot and don't be afraid of failure.

And that is exactly the same advice that I would pass on to any budding captains.

Listen to advice, take it on board, but you're the captain, you make the decisions.

Don't be afraid to ask people but you've got to make the decisions that you think are right for the team.
