Got the perfect build for basketball?

Dr Kevin Thompson, physiologist at the EIS, explains the physical characteristics that make up the ultimate hoops player.

Size matters...sometimes
Basketball players are very, very tall.

Extra height helps them get nearer the basket to score points, and to pass and receive the ball more easily.

But don't worry if you're not a six footer!

Some players are shorter, but they're not always at a disadvantage. They tend to be more agile, which means they can get around the court more effectively.

However, shorter players are only suited to certain positions.

Speed and power
Basketball players are excellent jumpers, which means they can get the ball near to the basket before shooting.

It also gives them an advantage when leaping to receive or intercept the ball.
