One of Britain's top players, John Amaechi, returned to England after five seasons in the prestigious American NBA.
He made his debut for new club Manchester Magic during the 2003/04 season. 'Meech' was the first English player ever to start a game in the NBA. He took some time out to share with the Academy his experiences there.
It was an absolute dream come true. My last club in the NBA was the Houston Rockets and I began my American adventure in 1995. As far as basketball is concerned, it is the absolute pinnacle of the sport. Although I was born in Boston, Massachusetts, I grew up in Manchester, England.
I was the first Briton to play in the NBA. I used to play rugby but as soon as I tried basketball I knew it was for me and I've gone on to have an incredible time in America. Click on to the different sections and read my thoughts on what life was like in the NBA.
