I am inspired by John Amaechi because he was brought up in England, he likes rugby like I do, and he still managed to get to where he is now.
I love basketball, and would like to be a player when I'm older. What does it take and what must I do?! Donald, 13, Manchester
Donald, John is a tremendous role model for anyone interested in pursuing the dream to be a great basketball player. You are right about his background, he started out playing rugby and didn't pick up a basketball until his late teens. The main thing about his development is how committed he was to improving his skill levels and the basic discipline he had when he started to play this great game. By working hard in school he had the work habits in place to make him excel at whatever he turned his hand to. To reach the ultimate level of basketball is a dream you have every right to strive for. At your age you need to play as much as possible but make sure you enjoy what you do. Get involved at your local club team. For example, there is a great programme at the Amaechi basketball centre in Manchester that I'm sure will have a team that's right for you. The sky's the limit on how far you can go if you keep working hard play all that you can.
