Recovery

A runner crashes out on a pile of silver space blankets
It's time to find a place to take a well-earned rest

You've been pounding the streets. Now you've got to hit the road to recovery.

There are two important ways to aid the recovery process - warming down and fuelling up.

When you suddenly stop after running for a prolonged period of time, you'll start to lose heat drastically.

This could cause the body to shut down.

That's why London marathon organisers make sure runners are wrapped up in silver space blankets at the end of the race.

You could also try stretching your legs or going for a gentle jog.

You also need to replenish all the energy you've used up during the race.

You may not feel like eating straight away, but it's important to take on board some food (preferably carbohydrates) and drink as soon as possible.

Now you're ready to start training for your next marathon!
