Edwards was the first to clear the magical 18m mark
This used to be known as the 'hop, step and jump'. The jumper needs to balance early speed and conserve energy for the final leap.
Jonathan Edwards (GB) Born 10.5.66 He set world records with two successive jumps of 18.16m and 18.29m. A silver at Atlanta in 1996 ended his run of 22 consecutive victories. But he then destroyed all the opposition to become Olympic and World champion in Sydney and Edmonton.
Inessa Kravets (UKR) Born 5.10.66
Kravets was the very first champion at Atlanta five years later. After fouling twice at the 1995 World Championships, she studied photos of Jonathan Edwards. She went on to leap 15.50m to break Ana Biryukova's world record by a massive 41 centimetres.
