The option to play a player behind the main striker but ahead of the attack is most often found in European and International football. The reasoning behind it is that a player who drops into the area between the opposition midfield and defence will get more time and space on the ball. From there it is possible to create goalscoring chances and this is a position where Zinedine Zidane has thrived for France and Real Madrid.
