The referee will signal the positioning and direction of an indirect free-kick in the same way as any other free-kick. However, to illustrate that the kick is indirect the referee keeps one arm outstretched above his head until after the kick is taken. That way if a goal was to be scored directly from the free-kick then it would be clear to players and spectators that the referee was ruling the goal out because it had been an indirect kick.
