Triple Jump
Around the Academy:
Triple jump
Edwards was the first to clear the magical 18m mark
This used to be known as the 'hop, step and jump' with the jumper needing to balance early speed and conserving energy for the final leap.

Jonathan Edwards (GB). Born 10.5.66
After breaking Willie Banks' 10-year record in 1995 with a 17.98m leap, he won at the Gothenburg Worlds. He set world records with two successive jumps of 18.16m and 18.29m.

A silver at Atlanta in 1996 ended his run of 22 consecutive victories.

But he then destroyed all the opposition to become Olympic and World champion in Sydney and Edmonton.

Triple jump
Inessa Kravets (UKR). Born 5.10.66
The women's triple jump was only granted world record status by the IAAF in 1991.

Kravets was the very first champion at Atlanta five years later.

After fouling twice at the 1995 World Championships, she studied photos of Jonathan Edwards.

She went on to leap 15.50m to break Ana Biryukova's world record by a massive 41 centimetres.
