Senegal star player, Pape Bouba Diop
World Cup record:
 2002   Quarter-finals

Did you know?
The World Cup is rightly regarded as one of the most important sporting competitions in the world... if not the most important. It was something of a surprise then that Senegal missed out on qualifying for the 1994 World Cup after forgetting to enter.

Senegal were a breath of fresh air and very nearly became Africa's best-ever team at the World Cup. All that and it was their debut too.

They set the ball rolling on the very first day against France when they were fast, fearless and flamboyant.

El Hadji Diouf was excellent, but now when you look back on their performances he's only one of a number of players who stand out.

Big money moves for Senegalese players will be the order of the day and when they come back in four years' time they certainly won't be plying their trade with unfashionable French clubs anymore.

Goal of the tournament? Senegal's length of the pitch effort against Denmark is up there with the best.

I'm confident that they'll be back in 2006, but I wonder what will happen to the team if Bruno Metsu follows the lead of the players and opts for a change of scene by going into club management.
