He was educated at Cranbrook School, Kent, which has also produced two other acclaimed commentators, Brian Moore (football) and Peter West (cricket).
Davies gained his first broadcasting experience with British Forces Network in Cologne and joined BBC Radio in 1963 after leaving the Army.
He switched to ITV to become a television football commentator and was part of the ITV commentary team for the 1966 World Cup, before travelling to the 1968 Olympic Games.
In 1969, he re-joined the BBC and has since covered many major sporting occasions including World Cups, Olympics and Wimbledon.
Davies commentated on the 1994 World Cup final, the 1995 and 1996 FA Cup finals, and the Euro 96 semi-final between England and Germany.
He lives in Berkshire with his wife, Penny.
