USA target 2014 World Cup

The United States Soccer Federation (Ussf) has outlined its intention to host the 2014 World Cup.

The 2006 World Cup will be held in Germany and the 2010 tournament is expected to be awarded to an African nation.

And the Ussf is hoping that the World Cup will then return to the USA 20 years after the country first hosted the competition in 1994.

"If Fifa continues with its current stated plan, 2010 would go to Africa and 2014 would be open, and we certainly would bid for that," said Ussf president Bob Contiguglia.

The Fifa executive committee will choose the 2010 site in two years and the 2014 site in 2008.

And Contiguglia is confident the USA will have a good chance of hosting the competition after the success of 1994, which was attended by a record total attendance of 3.5m.

The tournament was won be Brazil, who defeated Italy after a penalty shoot-out in the final.
