Gary Breen

Club: Coventry City
Position: Defender

Gary Breen's progress to the international stage has been a slow and steady one.

The central defender, now 28, came to Coventry via the likes of Maidstone and Peterborough before finally getting the call from the Irish coaching staff.

He has been an integral part of Coventry's aspirations since joining the club in January 1997 but it is Mick McCarthy who seems to bring out the best in Breen.

He should hold together Ireland's defensive ambitions having finally overcome a hernia operation in the closed season.
