Shay Given

Club: Newcastle United
Position: Goalkeeper

If the Republic of Ireland are to progress to the latter stages of the 2002 World Cup then they may have to rely on the ability of goalkeeper Shay Given.

His performances for Newcastle United in the 2001-02 season and during the Republic's World Cup campaign have been magnificent.

Arguably his finest 90 minutes came during the Republic's home match against Holland at home, which knocked the Dutch out and gave the Irish a chance to beat Iran in the play-off.

Given's best attributes are his great shot-stopping and ability to claim crosses - despite his relatively small height.
