Javier Aguirre

Position: Coach

Javier Aguirre took charge of the Mexican national team last July after a poor start to the qualifying campaign by his predecessor Enrique Meza.

The team won only one of the first five games in their final qualifying round, but Aguirre turned it around and Mexico only just made it to Japan and Korea.

Aguirre has previous World Cup experience - he was assistant coach when Mexico reached the second round in USA 94.

He was capped 50 times for his country and played when they staged the 1986 World Cup.

His playing career took in spells at Osasuna in Spain and Atalante, Guadalajara and America in Mexico.

Off the pitch he is a self-confessed bohemian, who likes living life to the full with copious amounts of food and drink - particularly rum, beer and tacos.

"For me, football is my job, marriage is stability, friends my means of escape and baseball is a sport I enjoy with my three sons," he has said in the past.
