England move on

England have left Dubai for South Korea as coach Sven-Goran Eriksson steps up his World Cup preparations.

Having said goodbye to their families in Dubai, the squad touched down in Jeju Island just after 1700 BST on Saturday.

They then took a 70-minute coach journey from the airport in the north of the island to the idyllic honeymoon retreat which will be their base on the south coast.

The squad are due to train at 1700 local time on Sunday ahead of Tuesday's friendly with tournament co-hosts South Korea.

Eriksson took England's party and their families to Dubai for a four-day period of rest and relaxation.

The players used the trip to acclimatise to the conditions they will face in the Far East.

England friendlies

  • Tue 21 May, 1130 BST
    v South Korea
  • Sun 26 May, 0730 BST
    v Cameroon
  • And they were joined by Newcastle United's Kieron Dyer, as he attempts to recover from the knee ligament injury he sustained against Southampton on the final day of the Premiership season.

Now they are in Korea, the build-up to the summer showpiece begins in earnest.

After Tuesday's match against the Koreans, they play Cameroon next Sunday in a final warm-up game before the World Cup.

West Ham's Trevor Sinclair will remain with the squad on stand-by while Dyer's fitness is assessed.

And Eriksson will also be keeping a close eye on captain David Beckham as he continues his recovery from a broken foot.

Beckham has started to take part in very light training work-out, but has yet to kick a ball with the left foot he injured against Deportivo La Coruna in the Champions League.

The Manchester United star will take no part in the friendlies against South Korea and Cameroon, setting his sights on England's first World Cup game against Sweden on 2 June.
