Keown in England squad

Martin Keown has been included in the England squad for the World Cup finals - but there is no place for Blackburn striker Matt Jansen.

Captain David Beckham was also named in the squad on Thursday after recovering from a broken bone in his foot, though Liverpool's Danny Murphy was put on stand-by.

There were no major surprises in the squad which features 12 players aged 24 or under.

West Ham midfielder Joe Cole was also called up, along with Leeds defender Danny Mills and recent England debutant Darius Vassell.

" I have no doubts about my ability and I am sure that I can do a job for the team "

Injury-prone midfielder Kieron Dyer also travels to the Far East, as does Manchester United's Nicky Butt, who was sidelined this week with a knee injury.

Jansen appeared to be on course for a late call-up after being watched by Eriksson on Wednesday night at Anfield.

Eriksson named five central defenders in his squad but only five strikers while the options in midfield also appeared limited.

He told the FA's website: "We have some difficult matches but an extremely exciting time ahead of us.

"I am happy to name this squad and I'm looking forward to meeting up with the players on Monday."

Defender Phil Neville missed out for the second time running and Real Madrid's Steve McManaman was also omitted.

Also left out were Ugo Ehiogu, Frank Lampard, Jamie Carragher, Darren Anderton and Andy Cole.

Cole immediately announced that he had quit international football.
