Clockwatch: Italy 1-1 Mexico

1422 BST: After what has effectively been three minutes of keep-ball by the Mexico side, the referee blows for full-time and both teams celebrate a safe passage into the second round.
Full-time: Mexico 1-1 Italy

90 mins: Both sides look happy to play down the clock but there are four minutes of stoppage time to be played.

85 mins: Italy finally break through thanks to Alessandro del Piero. From a throw-in, Vincenzo Montella cleverly hooks the ball into the box on the turn. Del Piero times his run to perfection and glances the ball into the back of the net.

83 mins: The ball is sent back into the Mexican box and falls kindly for Vincenzo Montella but he blasts the ball well over from just outside the six-yard box.

82 mins: Rafael Garcia flattens Alessandro del Piero on the edge of the box. There is a big discussion among the Italians as to who takes it. Vincenzo Montella finally steps up and blasts the ball into the wall.

81 mins: The pace of the game has subsided as both teams begin to tire.

79 mins: Mexico send on Francisco Palencia for goal-scorer Jared Borgetti.

77 mins: Alessandro del Piero replaces Francesco Totti for Italy.

75 mins: Mexico make a double substitution - Rafael Garcia and Gabriel Caballero come on for Ramon Morales and Johan Rodriguez.

71 mins: Italy's best chance of the half so far as Francesco Totti hits a perfect curling pass into the path of Christian Vieri but Vieri's first touch gives Oscar Perez the chance to get a hand to the ball.

67 mins: Gianluca Zambrotta takes the ball to the goal-line and cuts the ball across but it just eludes Vincenzo Montella and by the time he finds possession, Mexico are able to clear their lines.

65 mins: Ramon Morales slips the ball into Cuauhtemoc whose chip just goes over.

63 mins: Vincenzo Montella gets through the Mexican defence and does well to lift the ball over Oscar Perez and into the net - but once again Italy are denied by a linesman's flag.

62 mins: Francesco Coco replaces Christian Panucci for Italy.

60 mins: Jesus Arellano cuts in from the right wing and slips the ball inside to Johan Rodriguez, whose right-foot shot rifles past the far post.

59 mins: Mexico have had the better of the second half so far and are not sitting back on their lead but instead are pushing forward and causing problems for the Italian defence.

57 mins: Ramon Morales cuts in from the right wing and his shot only just clears the Italian bar.

56 mins: Despite being on the pitch for under two minutes, Vincenzo Montella picks up a yellow card for a foul.

54 mins: Gianluca Zambrotta is booked for bringing down Ramon Morales. Before the free-kick is taken, Italy replace Filippo Inzaghi with Vincenzo Montella.

53 mins: Jesus Arellano makes a fantastic run in from the right and plays a one-two and tries to place the ball in the net - but Fabio Cannavaro gets a foot in and somehow the Italians manage to clear.

49 mins: Filippo Inzaghi again gets through the Mexican defence but dallies too long and goalkeeper Oscar Perez does brilliantly to get a hand to the ball.

47 mins: Filippo Inzaghi beats the offside trap but loses control of the ball and the Mexican defence recover.

45 mins: Straight away Italy get a corner and the ball bobbles around the goalmouth before Mexico scramble it clear.

1333 BST: Italy kick off the second half.

1318 BST: The referee blows for half-time.

45 mins: Gianluca Zambrotta turns well and gets inside the Mexican defence but his subsequent shot is off-target.

41 mins: Mexico have another golden opportunity as Gerardo Torrado dummies the Italian defence and then puts Jared Borgetti through with a great pass - but a fantastic block by Fabio Cannavaro prevents Borgetti scoring. Italy counter-attack through Francesco Totti, who goes down in the Mexican half and is booked for diving.

40 mins: Jared Borgetti lays the ball off for Salvador Carmona, whose fierce shot just clears Gianluigi Buffon's post.

38 mins: With Rafael Marquez off the field receiving treatment, Mexico find themselves a defender short. Italy take advantage and feed the ball to Christian Vieri in the area. He has his back to the goal but holds the ball up well and lays it off for Gianluca Zambrotta but Zambrotta is at full stretch when he strikes the ball and it flies wide.

34 mins: Italy are stunned as Mexico take the lead through Jared Borgetti. After a patient build-up, Cuauhtemoc Blanco's cross finds Borgetti running into the area and his clever backward header fools Gianluigi Buffon and floats into the net.

32 mins: Filippo Inzaghi gets the ball in the box but some excellent defending from Salvador Carmona prevents the Italian from getting a shot in.

29 mins: Italy earn a couple of corners - Oscar Perez manages to punch the first clear and Totti again wastes the next.

23 mins: From a free-kick 25 yards out, Francesco Totti powers the ball round Mexico's minimalist wall but it skims just wide of Oscar Perez' right-hand post.

22 mins: Italy are enjoying a period of sustained pressure. Some quick one-touch play sees the ball come to Christian Vieri but his volley is straight at Oscar Perez.

19 mins: Filippo Inzaghi weaves through the Mexico defence and plays a square ball across the area to where Francesco Totti is in acres of space. But Totti again fluffs his lines by hooking the ball wide.

17 mins: Good build-up play from the Italians ends with Christian Panucci's first time centre being cleared by Rafael Marquez. But there are boos from the crowd as Francesco Totti wastes the ensuing corner by blasting the ball over everyone's head.

14 mins: Francesco Totti's clever flick sets up Christian Vieiri, who unleashes a left-foot shot from outside the box which goes just over.

12 mins: Filippo Inzaghi receives the ball on the edge of the box and places it in the back of the net but the linesman flag is up for offside and Italy are denied an early lead.

11 mins: It has been a lively opening to the game with both teams willing to press forward.

9 mins: Christian Panucci makes inroads into Mexico's box - he falls to the floor looking for a penalty but the referee books him for diving.

6 mins: Italy push forward and the ball finds its way to Filippo Inzaghi but his shot is not strong enough to trouble Oscar Perez in the Mexican goal.

4 mins: Fabio Cannavaro is booked for a crunching tackle on Cuauhtemoc Blanco - the Italian will miss the next game if his side get through.

2 mins: Christian Panucci tears down the left wing and has his feet taken from under him by Jesus Arellano's sliding tackle. Arellano is booked.

1231 BST: The crowd roars and the cameras flash as Mexico kick off in humid conditions in Oita.
