Salif Diao scored a wonderful goal, then saw red as Senegal displayed the good, the bad and the ugly during their 1-1 draw with Denmark.
Diao's 52nd-minute strike was the 50th goal of the World Cup, and it is unlikely any team will match the flowing five-man move which saw Senegal sweep the length of the pitch before scoring.
It was a mixed day for the Sedan midfielder, however.
He conceded the first-half penalty which Jon Dahl Tomasson scored to give Denmark the lead, and he was sent off after 79 minutes for a rotten tackle on Rene Henriksen.
It was lively, if not pretty encounter, but both sides will be happy with the point which leaves qualification for the second phase in their own hands.
Tempers were frayed right from the start in the searing heat of the Daegu Stadium.
Denmark's Ebbe Sand picked up a yellow card for a scything challenge on Diao, then Senegal's Khalilou Fadiga was booked for retaliation after a foul which sparked an untidy flare-up between both teams.
Surprisingly, however, it was Denmark who adjusted better to the heat and they took the lead with a penalty on the quarter-hour mark.
There was no question about the award. Diao clattered into the back of Tomasson, who picked himself up to slot home and claim his third goal of the tournament.
Diao almost made amends within two minutes, as his towering header from Senegal's first corner brought a great save from Thomas Sorensen.
Tomasson then struck the ball into the net, but the goal was controversially disallowed and the AC Milan striker cautioned - possibly for handball, although he controlled the ball with his chest.
Playing in 30 degrees one thing for Africans but difficult for Europeans
Danish coach Morten Olsen
In the 32C heat, the tempo was slower than many of the previous group matches.
And Denmark bossed Senegal during the first half in a manner which must have had world champions France wondering how they lost to the Africans.
Chances were at a premium.
For Denmark, Thomas Gravesen's shot forced an unconvincing save from Tony Sylva, while Fadiga's skilful play in creating an opening inside the box was undone by a weak finish.
Senegal made an adventurous double substitution at half-time, with strikers Henri Camara and Souleymane Camara on for Moussa N'diaye and Pape Sarr.
And the move reaped rewards as Senegal scored a fantastic equalising goal on 52 minutes.
Diao was the hero, finishing a sweeping move which covered the length of the pitch. The pace and movement of Senegal was delightful and belied their ineffective football beforehand.
Salif Diao hit a wonderful goal before being sent-off
The goal sparked Senegal into life and Fadiga and El Hadji Diouf, both had shots, and Souleymane Camara failed to make the best of a clear shooting chance.
Souleymane Camara should have put Senegal in front on 69 minutes. Fadiga sent Diouf racing clear down the right and his intelligent pass gave Camara a glorious chance - but the Monaco striker slammed the ball into the side netting.
With 10 minutes remaining, the ugly side of Senegal's game reared its head, as Diao received a straight red card for a terrible studs-up challenge on Rene Henriksen.
It signalled an untidy end to the game, although the point served both sides well in their quest for qualification.
