Victor Pua has been involved with the Uruguay national team since taking their Under-20s as far as the 1997 World Youth Cup final and the semi-finals two years later.
He first coached the senior team in 1999 and, using several of the youngsters he had first blooded, took them to the Copa America final.
He then stood down, becoming assistant manager to Argentine Daniel Passarella, who was installed as number one for the World Cup qualifiers.
However, Pua took up the reins again when Passarella stood down halfway through the campaign.
Results have mainly been good, but a high-profile row with star striker Dario Silva has not helped, while some other players have made clear their preference for Passarella.
