Former international goalkeeper Senol Gunes achieved the feat of qualifying Turkey for their first World Cup since 1954.
Gunes had a hard act to follow in Mustafa Denizli, who took Turkey to the last eight at Euro 2000.
He was criticised by the media when his side threw away a 1-0 lead to Sweden to miss out on automatic qualification as group leaders.
But he kept his cool to lead Turkey successfully through their play-off with Austria.
Born in 1952, Gunes spent most of his playing career with Trabzonspor in Turkey where, as one of the finest keepers in the country, he won the league championship six times between 1975 and 1984.
He won 31 caps for his country before taking up his first coaching role with Trabzonspor in the late 1980s.
The club twice finished league runners-up under him and also pulled off a shock win over Aston Villa in the 1994 Uefa Cup.
