Taiwan blast Senegal for no-show

Senegal's players met the Taiwanese - but did little else
The Taiwan foreign ministry has criticised the Senegal national team for failing to keep a promise to perform a demonstration match for a 4,000-strong crowd in Taipai.

The crowd were promised that the full Dakar Lions side would appear to play against local teams.

Instead, only a couple of players showed up, and performed only a few basic skills before leaving again.

"We are disappointed and very unhappy over what had happened," said Taiwan foreign ministry spokesperson Chang Siao-yue.

"There was such a discrepancy between what we had expected and what they had performed," she added.

"In the agreement, the Senegalese team promised to do a demonstration. And according to common sense and general understanding of such agreement, it meant they were supposed to give us an up-to-standard performance,"

Both the crowds and government officials were stunned when Senegal cancelled the full match, claiming they had left their shirts and boots at the airport.

The Taiwan media were equally critical.

"The foreign ministry and sports authorities had expected to cause a whirlwind of football interest by inviting the team, but the effort ended up in a storm," the United News Daily said.

"The lack of coordination had led the press and fans to expect a demonstration of world-class skills, while the Senegalese players, who were tired and some injured, had only wanted to put on some easy show."

Senegal's 33-hour trip is believed to have cost Taiwan some 10 million Taiwan dollars (298,000 US).
