Republic of Ireland manager Mick McCarthy was an impressed spectator as World Cup opponents Cameroon drew 2-2 with England in Kobe on Sunday.

The Republic boss said he was particularly impressed with midfield men Salomon Olembe and Marc-Vivien Foe as well as defender Rigobert Song.

He also pointed out the obvious qualities of the Indomitable Lions' front pairing of Patrick Mboma and scorer Samuel Eto'o.

"They are a big, powerful side with good pace and a lot of threat in their front line," said McCarthy whose Irish team face the African champions in their opening Group E fixture on 1 June.

"Cameroon may even be better than Germany although I believe the Germans will be better organised and more disciplined.

"Cameroon are strong and will have some tricks up their sleeves."

However, McCarthy felt England were not in top gear for the friendly match.

"England were not as competitive as they might have been," he added.

"They gave me the impression they were a team with injuries and did not want to risk getting any more."
