The state of Luis Figo's ankle is causing ever-increasing concern to the Portuguese press.

"Figo does not need surgery," sports daily Record says, perhaps more in hope than expectation.

For the paper goes on to chronicle his ankle problems and to calculate his chances of a visit to an operating theatre.

"Forgive them, Figo," A Bola says in reference to the bad press the Real Madrid midfielder generally gets in Spain, particularly as a result of his lacklustre performances in the Champions League semi-finals.

Figo is also the hot subject of the Portuguese news dailies, who consider his troubled end of season.

"Figo's injury worries," is the Jornal de Noticias headline, reflecting the mood across the nation.

But the Publico daily is most unequivocal, running a headline with a quote from ex Argentina star and Real Madrid coach Jorge Valdano.

"The injury was far worse than people thought," he said.

Figo first hurt his ankle in February, in a Champions League match against Portuguese side Porto.
