Gamarra has hinted he may hang up his boots after this summer's World Cup and he has every intention of going out on a high note.
Now 31, he has enjoyed a superb international record and, as well as boasting impressive defensive skills, he has not committed a single foul in his last two World Cups.
Paraguay, however, have shown the signs of a weak defence in the tournament's build-up and Gamarra will have to be back to his best to settle their nerves.
He has impressed at home, in Argentina and Brazil in domestic football, while also making appearances for Benfica and Atletico Madrid in Europe.
Injuries have started to plague his game but he still has all the attributes of a world-class defender.
