The Super Eagles may pull out of a friendly against China, scheduled to take place in Beijing on 11 May.

This would be done as a mark of respect to Nigeria's late sports minister Ishaya Mark Aku, who died in a plane crash on Saturday.

"What's the point going ahead with the friendly? We have lost someone dear to our team," Nigeria FA secretary-general Taiwo Ogunjobi told BBC Sport Online in Lagos.

"It's a national tragedy (the plane crash) and we at the FA see it that way. I may call off the China friendly," Ogunjobi said.

The warm-up against their Asian counterparts is part of Nigeria's preparations for the World Cup, which begins on 31 May.

Tragedy

Aku was on his way from the northern city of Kano to Lagos for Saturday's warm-up match between the Super Eagles and Kenya's Harambee Stars.

The aircraft the sports minster was travelling in crashed into a residential area shortly after take-off.

More than 100 people, including the 76 passengers on board, perished in the disaster.

The tragedy occurred before the match but the Super Eagles had no knowledge of Aku's death until Saturday night.

"The entire team was informed after returning from a social function we went to," Ogunjobi said.

Players reaction

Aku's death brought a solemn atmosphere to the Eagles camp.

Nigerian defender Rabiu Afolabi
Afolabi said the crash is a sad moment for the team

"It's sad and unfair that this has come when the World Cup is approaching," said defender Rabiu Afolabi.

Karibe Ojigwe, who scored the first goal against Kenya, said: "The happiness I had in scoring my goal has been wiped out with this sad news."

Nigeria experienced an almost similar tragic event five days before the start of the 1998 World Cup, when then military ruler General Sani Abacha died in his sleep.

Ogunjobi said the sport minister's death would not dampen Nigeria's hope for an impressive performance at the World Cup.
