Philippe Troussier has admitted he could be the next France coach if Roger Lemerre is replaced this week. The French Football Federation is expected to make a decision on Lemerre's future at a meeting in Lyon on Friday.
And Troussier, who guided Japan to the second round of the World Cup, says he is one of the candidates to take charge.
"I'm among the candidates in case there are changes at the top of the French team," said Troussier.
"But I'm not the only one. If it doesn't happen, the fact I have been cited is in itself a great honour for me - it's a sign of acknowledgement.
"Otherwise I have not made a decision yet."
Defending champions France suffered an embarrassing first-round exit in Japan and Korea after failing to score a single goal.
