France's early exit is the worst ever performance by defending champions at the World Cup.
The 2-0 defeat by Denmark saw them go out at the first hurdle with only one point and without a single goal.
No wins for Les Bleus
France's failure to win any of their three group games is unprecedented in World Cup history.
Only Italy (1950) and Brazil (1966) were champions eliminated after the group stage in previous tournaments, but they at least won one game.
Italy finished second of
three teams in 1950, while Brazil finished third of four in
1966.
But France finished bottom of Group A, with only one point from their goalless draw with Uruguay.
The last team to do so were Greece in 1994.
France's inability to find the net in the 270 minutes of open play in their three Group A matches also sets another ignominious record.
The goalless streak breaks their own previous World Cup blank of 201 minutes, set between their last goal of the 1930 tournament and their first of 1934.
For the record, the last time they actually scored at all was in the 89th minute of their 3-2 friendly win against
South Korea on 26 May.
First France defeat for Zidane
The defeat by Denmark was the first time France had lost a competitive match when Zinedine Zidane was in the side.
Before Tuesday's game, Les Bleus had played 27 competitive matches with him involved, winning 17 and drawing 10.
But in 13 fixtures wihout Zidane, they have only won four.
And his absence through injury for France's first two games in these finals proved costly.
