A statue of David Beckham was unveiled in Trafalgar Square ahead of England's crucial World Cup showdown with Nigeria.

A waxwork dummy of the England captain appeared on a spare plinth at the famous London tourist attraction on Tuesday morning.

Unfortunately, most football fans missed it as the model was whisked away before the morning rush-hour.

The Beckham figure came from Madame Tussaud's and was set up by the company as a publicity stunt.

But its cameo appearance is bound to spark calls for a permanent tribute to the man who scored the goal that beat Argentina on Friday.

Honoured

A spokesman for the Greater London Authority told BBC Sport Online: "Beckham is obviously the hero of the hour, but you can never pre-empt that sort of debate.

"You can never tell what future heroes will be honoured and what monuments will be going up."

He confirmed the fourth plinth - just down from Nelson's Column - was currently free, although he said the shape of it was specifically designed for a figure on horseback.

Beckham on a white charger, possibly? Or how about sitting astride Red Rum - two legends for the price of one?

But for all the talk, even if England were to, ahem, win the World Cup, there's little or no chance of ever seeing the skipper joining the four lions in the dirt.

What sculptor would seriously take on that task, knowing every time you went to apply the finishing touches, he'd go and change his hair again.
