Sinclair in for injured Murphy

West Ham's Trevor Sinclair has been called into the England squad as a replacement for injured midfielder Danny Murphy.

Murphy was ruled out of the World Cup after becoming the third member of the England squad to break a bone in his foot.

He broke the second toe of his left foot, a similar injury to those suffered by David Beckham and Gary Neville.

With Sinclair elevated to the full squad, England Under-21 captain David Dunn and Alan Smith have been put on stand-by.

Murphy will be in plaster for two to three weeks and arrangements are being made to fly him home.

In the meantime, Sinclair will be hopping back on a plane, having only just arrived home in England.

The West Ham midfielder had travelled as a stand-by player to Korea and played in the friendly with South Korea.

But he chose to fly home after being told he was not being included in England's 23-man squad.

"He wanted to go home and I do not blame him for that," Eriksson told a news conference at England's training camp on Jeju Island.

"Being the 24th man and waiting for one of your friends to drop out is not nice.

"He was just waiting for someone to get injured and he was not comfortable with that."

"Danny Murphy is someone who can play anywhere across midfield, and Trevor Sinclair has shown he can do that to," said the England coach.

Eriksson sympathised with Murphy, who suffered his injury in an awkward fall towards the end of an England training session on Wednesday.

Murphy was only in the squad as a replacement for Liverpool team-mate Steven Gerrard, having initially been named as a stand-by.

Eriksson said: "He is very disappointed, of course.

"He is going to miss the World Cup and it is very unfortunate to get injured just a week before the tournament starts."

But Eriksson received better news on his other injury doubts, with Robbie Fowler and Nicky Butt both playing a part in training.

Fowler took part in his first session since encountering a hip problem, joining in with a six-a-side game.

Butt engaged in some one-touch work in a circle with his squad mates, although he then peeled off to do rehabilitation on his own with England physio Gary Lewin.

"Butt will do everything with the squad on Saturday. He had a good session today and did some good tests.

"David Beckham will not play football during training but his injury is progressing well. It's the same with Kieron Dyer."

Teddy Sheringham was also back in action after suffering blisters on his foot during Tuesday's 1-1 draw with South Korea.

England continue their World Cup warm-up with a friendly against Cameroon in Kobe, Japan, on Sunday.
