Dyer makes England squad

Kieron Dyer has been named by coach Sven-Goran Eriksson in England's 23-man World Cup squad.

The Newcastle midfielder had been rated doubtful after he sustained a knee injury in the final match of the English Premiership season.

He was the victim of a bad tackle by Southampton's Moroccan defender Tahar El Khalej and his World Cup place had looked in serious jeopardy.

That Dyer is winning his fitness battle will be a relief for Eriksson, who already has concerns in midfield.

Captain David Beckham and Nicky Butt are both racing to recover from injuries.

However, Dyer's agent Jonathan Barnett revealed the player's recovery was not yet complete.

"It's a calculated risk, he's got an injury and it's getting better every day. I think the doctors think it's a risk worth taking," he said.

"Mr Eriksson has taken the advice of the medical people around him. Kieron's very flattered. All he wants is to play in the World Cup."

West Ham midfielder Trevor Sinclair, who was on standby with the squad in South Korea, is expected to fly back to England on Wednesday.

Progress

Football Association communications director Paul Newman said: "The decision was taken this evening.

"Clearly there is a situation where Trevor Sinclair can be recalled between now and 1 June if that is required.

"Kieron is in the 23 and we hope he continues to make progress."

He added: "Trevor is committed to remaining on standby and is keen to be part of the set-up. Sven is happy with that. Trevor will train every day at West Ham.

"Sven has paid tribute to his commitment and professionalism."

England's 23-man World Cup squad:

Goalkeepers: Seaman (Arsenal), Martyn (Leeds), James (West Ham)

Defenders: Ferdinand (Leeds), Campbell (Arsenal), Southgate (Middlesbrough), Ashley Cole (Arsenal), Bridge (Southampton), Mills (Leeds), Brown (Man Utd), Keown (Arsenal)
