Beckham making progress
England skipper David Beckham
Beckham has taken part in some light training
Football Association spokesman Paul Newman says David Beckham is not yet assured of making the match against Sweden.

Reports from Dubai on Friday suggested the the England captain would be fit for their opening World Cup game against Sweden.

But Newman told BBC Sport Online that while Beckham's condition is improving, he remains an injury doubt.

"The situation is that David is continuing to make progress.

"Everyone is hoping he will be fit for the match but it is too early to say," Newman said from Dubai.

The midfielder, who is making a slow recovery from his foot injury, enjoyed a light training session on Friday.

"It is true that David is still unable to kick the ball with his left foot," Newman added.

"David took part in Friday's workout at the Dubai Police Officers' Club.

"He jogged for some time before carrying out light training with the ball.

"But I still don't think he can use his left foot properly."

Nicky Butt rejoined training with his England team-mates after showing encouraging progress from his knee injury.

And Sol Campbell, who has a gashed shin, again trained in the gym at the Jumeirah Beach Club, where the squad is staying.

"It's just continuation of the careful preparation that has been specially planned for each player in the squad," said Newman.

"Campbell, who picked up a minor knock over the weekend, is recovering and the doctors attending on him advised him more rest.

"Otherwise, every one is in good health and good spirits."

England fly to South Korea on Saturday, where they will play the co-host nation in a warm-up game on Tuesday.

They then face Cameroon in a friendly on 26 May before the finals begin on 31 May.
