Eriksson delays England squad
Eriksson (right) will wait before naming England's squad
England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson has delayed naming his World Cup squad until after the crucial Premiership meeting between Manchester United and Arsenal.

Eriksson initially planned to announce the players he will take to Korea and Japan on 7 May - but has now decided to wait for 48 hours.

He wants to watch more players in action to finalise his plans before leaving for England's pre-Wold Cup training camp in Dubai.

Eriksson will anxiously await the outcome of Arsenal's visit to Old Trafford next Wednesday, as well as Liverpool's meeting with Blackburn Rovers at Anfield.

The Swede wants to check on the fitness of England's players, and many members of Eriksson's squad will be in action in those games.

And he will be hoping the curse of Old Trafford does not strike his preparations again.

Arsenal's Martin Keown faces an anxious wait
Eriksson has already witnessed David Beckham's broken foot at Old Trafford, as well as Sol Campbell and Ugo Ehiogu getting injured in the FA Cup semi-final held at the stadium.

It was then the turn of right-hand man Tord Grip to witness Gary Neville suffering a serious foot injury at Old Trafford in the Champions League game against Bayer Leverkusen.

Eriksson, who has yet to make his mind up on the final "one or two" members of his squad, has not yet decided which of the two games to watch on 8 May.

He could either visit Old Trafford to take a final look at the likes of fringe candidates Wes Brown, Phil Neville and Martin Keown.

Jamie Carragher is sweating on England place
Or he choose to spy on Liverpool in action and consider the merits of possible squad members such as Jamie Carragher and Danny Murphy.

FA spokesman Paul Newman told its website, www.theFA.com: "Sven-Goran Eriksson will now be naming his World Cup squad on 9 May.

"This follows the decision to hold two Premiership games on May 8. Sven will attend one of those two games, with Tord Grip going to the other.

"Sven will make the announcement on the FA's website, followed by a Press conference."

Despite the two-day delay, Eriksson is still naming his squad well ahead of the official deadline, 21 May, although changes can be made before that date.

Eriksson will take his players away to Dubai on 13 May for rest and recuperation.
