Ferguson's Beckham hope
David Beckham
Beckham has made a surprisingly quick recovery
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson says David Beckham has a chance of playing in the Champions League final on 15 May.

Beckham broke the second metatarsal bone in his foot at the beginning of April and it was feared he could miss this summer's World Cup.

But the England skipper has made a rapid recovery. He will have the cast on his foot removed at the end of the week and a scan will reveal how close he is to a comeback.

Ferguson feels Beckham could be ready in time for the Champions League final - if United get their by overcoming Bayer Leverkusen in the semi-final second leg on Tuesday.

"I would like to think he's got a chance and you always keep the hope going," Ferguson said.

"One thing with David is he won't need a lot of time to get fit.

"It's a difficult one though because he's still got the pot on his leg.

"He will probably have a scan at the end of the week to look at it further, but it's difficult to say."

On Sunday, Beckham's father Ted said: "Everything is moving in the right direction.

"There is certainly some optimism from David that he can make the European final if United get through.

"People have suggested that David is a quick healer but he has never had a serious injury before.

"But steady progress is now being made which is encouraging."

United were held to a 2-2 home draw by Leverkusen in the semi-final first leg on Wednesday.
