Ecuador name squad
Agustin Delgado
Delgado has been injured much of the season

Ecuador have become the first South American side to name their World Cup squad.

Coach Hernan Dario Gomez named the 23 players that will represent Ecuador at their first finals 19 days before the Fifa deadline.

Ecuador have one of the most settled sides in world football and there were no surprises.

Gomez, a Colombian who led his own country at France 98, stuck by the players who took Ecuador through the qualifying campaign.

Veteran Alex Aguinaga, who has been dogged by a troublesome knee in the last year and will be 34 when the tournament starts, will captain the side.

And striker Agustin Delgado, who has also been plagued by injury, was also included.

Delgado, Ecuador's leading scorer in the qualifiers with nine goals, has only played four matches since last November, having undergone two knee operations in that period.

There was no last-minute reprieve for strikers Eduardo Hurtado and Angel Graziani, who were both dropped by Gomez early in his reign as coach.

Ecuador continue their preparations against club side Guayaquil on Friday before travelling to the United States on Monday.

They will play Yugoslavia on Wednesday in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
