Morten Olsen, 53, took over after Denmark crashed out of Euro 2000 after losing all their group games and had a rocky start to his international career.
A narrow win over Iceland and a draw with Northern Ireland in the first two World Cup qualifiers had sections of the media sniping.
But, after imposing his attacking style on the team, they finished top of their group thus avoiding the play-offs.
His first coaching job was with Brondby in 1990. He has also been in charge of FC Koln in Germany and Ajax in the Netherlands before taking up his current post.
Olsen had a low-lrofile playing career at club level, but nevertheless was capped 102 times by Denmark and appeared in the 1986 World Cup.
