Mirko Jozic became manager of Croatia following the side's failure to qualify for Euro 2000 under predecessor Miroslav Blazevic.
That was a major setback given the country's success two years earlier in reaching the semi-finals of France 98, where they lost 2-1 to the hosts.
Jozic's first involvement with the national team came when he coached Yugoslavia Under-20s to the World Youth Cup title in 1987.
Several of those who play for Croatia today started out under Jozic in that squad.
At club level his most notable success came in Chile with Colo Colo, where he won the league title three times.
