Alexandre Guimaraes took over midway through the Concacaf World Cup qualifiers following the exit of Gilson Nunes.
Costa Rica lost only one of 11 qualifiers and helped the Ticos become the first side to ever win in Mexico's Azteca stadium to top the group ahead of both Mexico and the USA.
He also took Costa Rica to this year's Gold Cup final where they were beaten by the USA.
Guimaraes played in the successful 1990 team and will pit his wits against the man who coached him in that tournament, China boss Bora Milutinovic, in the same group this year.
Born in Brazil, Guimaraes became a Costa Rican national after moving their aged 11.
The Costa Rica job is his first at international level but he has coached domestically in Costa Rica and Guatemala.
