Nunes calls for change
Rolando Fonseca
Fonseca could play just behind a front two

Former Costa Rica coach Gilson Nunes has revealed that he thinks the side should take a leaf out Brazil's book.

Nunes was in charge of Costa Rica for 10 months two years ago, with present boss Alexandre Guimaraes working as his assistant.

Guimaraes took over responsibility of team affairs from the Brazilian midway through Costa Rica's lengthy qualifying campaign.

Despite the result, Nunes liked what he saw in 'Guima's' team when he watched their 2-0 defeat against South Korea on television.

But he thinks there is room for improvement and recommends Brazil's newly-adopted three-pronged attack.

For the three-Rs - Ronaldo, Rivaldo and Ronaldinho - read Winston Parks, Rolando Fonseca and Paulo Wanchope.

"Guimaraes could do something like Luiz Felipe Scolari is doing with Ronaldinho in the Brazilian team," he explained to BBC Sport Online.

"He could use three forwards with Fonseca a little behind Wanchope and Parks up at the front."

The idea came to Nunes after he saw Parks in action for the first time in the defeat against South Korea.

"I liked the way he positioned himself on the pitch," Nunes said of the 20-year-old.

"He can be someone to play with Wanchope, with Fonseca further back. Fonseca knows how to play coming from behind."

Fonseca is one of the key components in Costa Rica's campaign, as he showed when scoring both goals against the USA in the match that sealed their place in Korea and Japan.

In total he scored 10 goals in the 15-month qualifying period with Wanchope finding the net seven times.

Nunes is excited by the prospect of Parks being added to the partnership and reads little into Costa Rica's poor form on their short tour to Asia.

The defeat to South Korea was preceded by a tame 1-1 draw against Japan.

"That was not Costa Rica and the result against South Korea was delusive.

"Guimaraes made numerous changes because of injury and he tried new players, maybe even with an eye to confusing World Cup opponents."
