Record price for Pele shirt
Brazil's Pele celebrates the first goal in the 4-1 win over Italy in the 1970 World Cup final

Pele's 1970 World Cup-winning shirt fetched a record 157,750 at an auction of football memorabilia at Christie's.

The yellow number 10 shirt worn by the Brazilian legend was expected to go for about 50,000 but frenzied bidding pushed up the price before the hammer fell to an anonymous phone bidder.

Pele swapped his jersey with opponent Roberto Rosato after the victorious 4-1 final over Italy in Mexico City's Azteca Stadium.

"This has broken the world record for a shirt by a long way and we are delighted," said Christie's spokesman Rik Pike.

"Pele is a globally recognised name, universally recognized as the greatest footballer of the 20th century, and this shows the developing strength of the football memorabilia market."

The previous record for a soccer jersey - sold by Christie's on 2000 - was 91,750 for the shirt worn by England's Geoff Hurst at the 1966 World Cup final.

The 1970 match - played in front of a crowd of 107,000 on 21 June - is best remembered for the artistry and skill of Brazil's football, with Pele in scintillating form.

Pele scored the opening goal, rising high above defender Facchetti to head home past goalkeeper Enrico Albertosi from a cross by Rivelino.

Further strikes from Jairzinho and Gerson took Brazil clear with Boninsegna answering for the Italians.

But the game was crowned by a majestic Carlos Alberto goal which is rated as one of the best of all-time.

The ball was played into Pele in the middle of the pitch just outside the Italian penalty area.

The maestro calmly stopped the ball before lazily stroking it to his right into the path of the speeding Alberto, who launched a rocket into the right corner of Albertosi's net.

Former Brazil national coach Mario Zagallo had recently cast doubt on the authenticity of the jersey.

He told the O Globo newspaper that he still possessed the shirt Pele wore during the first-half of 1970 final, and that team fitness trainer Admilo Chirol had Pele's second-half shirt.

Christie's said it was aware of the Brazilian report but was satisfied with the authenticity of the shirt.
