Undoubtedly the best remembered Argentine of France 98, Diego Simeone was infamous for his part in David Beckham's sending off.
Beckham, playing in the second round against the South Americans, reacted to a typically bruising challenge by Simeone and was subsequently sent off.
In the England midfielder's absence, the match went to penalties, Argentina won and Simeone became one of England's least popular figures.
Like Beckham, the 32-year-old veteran of the national side has missed much of the build-up to the tournament with an injury - in his case to his knee.
But the winner of more than 100 caps looks likely to make it back.
His experience, leadership and defensive ability will hold his team-mates in good stead.
