Claudio Caniggia has been fined £1,500 and given a two-match international ban after being sent off during Argentina's 1-1 draw with Sweden in the Group F match two weeks ago.
Caniggia became the first player at a World Cup to be red-carded without actually playing when he was dismissed for dissent while sitting on the substitutes bench.
Argentina crashed out of the tournament as a result of their failure to beat Sweden, thus ending Caniggia's hopes of adding to his international goal tally.
The ban means he would miss his country's first two Copa America matches, but at 35, he may well have played his last international as younger talent like Javier Saviola is given a chance.
