Your favourite World Cup song
Will Ant and Dec enjoy the same success as Baddiel and Skinner?
England's official World Cup song will be sung by Pop Idol presenters Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly.

Will it be a hit with fans? And what is your favourite World Cup ditty from years gone by?

WORLD CUP SONGS
Which is your favourite?
Back Home - 1970
World in Motion - 1990
Three Lions - 1998
Vindaloo - 1998
We're on the ball - 2002
(Ant and Dec's new song)

The duo, more commonly known as Ant and Dec, have recorded 'We're On The Ball', a reworking of an old Arsenal anthem.

They follow in the footsteps of Echo and the Bunnymen, who were responsible for England's last official anthem, 'How Does it Feel'.

That offering was largely overshadowed by David Baddiel and Frank Skinner's re-working of 'Three Lions '98' and 'Vindaloo' by Fat Les.

Other England songs have included the classic 'World in Motion' by New Order, featuring the infamous John Barnes rap, and Kevin Keegan and co's 1982 rendition of 'This Time'.

What is your most memorable World Cup anthem? And will Ant and Dec's offering be a success?

Have your say

World In Motion - the best song by a very large margin. It stirs very strong emotions of a time that was fantastic for me - Gazza, Lineker, Platt and the rest coupled with a song that sends shivers down my spine. When we lost on penalties, I laid in bed and played it over and over. I'll never forget it - what a brilliant tournament and song!
Keith Bate, England

Three Lions and World in Motion are easily the best football songs. Ant and Dec's song a lousy football song - I know they are looking for new material to inspire the troops and fans but they could do a lot better than We're On the Ball.
Fletch, Canada

I think that We're On the Ball is great but Vindaloo is also a good song.
Sarah, United Kingdom

Back Home narrowly beats Vindaloo as the best song. Easy lyrics, good tune, can't do better than that!
Abi Kasumu, England

Italia 90 was summed up perfectly for me by two things - Pavarotti and Nessun Dorma (inspired BBC choice) and New Order's World In Motion, a poem to football in general and in England in specific..
Ravi Motha, England

Three Lions by Baddiel and Skinner is the all time greatest English footie song.
Stefan Fisher, Nottingham

I think Ant and Dec are top lads, however their new football song for the World Cup is atrocious. How could we even dream of letting them near a recording studio after Let's Get Ready to Rumble. Better luck next time lads! Three Lions will certainly take some beating.
Sam King, England

Bring back the good old three lions. It was the best and really brought the atmosphere of the World Cup to the pubs and stadiums and even at home.
Ash Coulson, England

Have you noticed that the majority of the people who have said Ant and Dec are good are women? Obviously they haven't pictured a few thousand Englishmen after a few beers trying to sing this tosh! Three Lions for me.
Kye, England

Bring back the good old three lions

I am getting so excited about the World Cup that I would sing anything they throw at me at the moment! But 3 lions did the business for me.
Kate, England England...England

I can't believe that this song was allowed. The fans in Japan and Korea will stick by 3 lions and World In Motion as will those in the pubs across the nation.
Danny, England

We're On The Ball is a bad song but a great footie anthem. It'll do great because it's Ant and Dec. I still prefer Three Lions though!
Katie, London

The new song is simply rubbish. World In Motion will always be the best World Cup song.
Kazzy, England

Everyone forgets Cinnamon Stick, one of England's b sides, with Jeff Astle singing his heart out. A great song, not even related to football, perfect in every way and what's more all the players kept their credibility intact!
Alex Clarke, England

The remake is a sure fire hit. If it doesn't make No1 I'll shave my tache off.
Matt, England

"Football's coming home" is the best cup song ever!
Egbert, Belgium

Carl, West Midlands

Three Lions was the best England song ever - I remember singing it with drunken patriotic passion at football matches, indie nightclubs and even a village fete disco.

Also worthy of a mention is On Me Head Son by Sporting Les (aka Fat Les) which appeared in Mike Bassett, England Manager. Fantastic!
Andy Darlington, England

Three Lions is the best footie song ever released, followed by Vindaloo. Two top songs and much better than On The Ball!
Carl, West Midlands

In my mind it has to be an anthem that can be sung from the stands, not a pop song. It also has to be independent from any club (using an old Arsenal song won't sit well with many). Three Lions was a perfect example, with Vindaloo a close second.
Andy, Michigan, USA

I like the new song a lot and I think it's very motivating. I agree with people that Three Lions is good, and I'm sure no one can beat that. But at least this one's better than "Back Home" or "Vindaloo".
Heather, UK

This just doesn't seem catchy enough; what works is something that is already a terrace anthem. Listen to the 2002 World Cup version of DJ Otzi's "Hey Baby". Now that is going to work!
Jen, England

This is a low budget, zero quality production of mind-blowing mediocrity

John Barnes' rap was genius - by far the best thing he ever did in an England shirt. Except for that one goal against Brazil of course.
Luke Wilson, UK

The video is quite good, but the lyrics are dreadful!
Pete Redmore, England

Ant and Dec's "so-called" song is so bad, I cried myself to sleep on hearing it. The lyrics make DJ Otzi look like Shakespeare. This is a low budget, zero quality production of mind-blowing mediocrity.
Pascal Magdinier, England

Ant and Dec's 'We're on the Ball' song is a great World Cup anthem!
Steven Barbery, England

What next - Spice Girls or Britney for Euro 2004?
Duncan Elliott, New Zealand

Aren't these the two geniuses that launched ITV Digital? A truly Titanic track!

What is this terrible dirge? An old Arsenal song sung by a couple of nitwits!

J Theakstone, England

It's a tall order for anyone to beat Three Lions because it could be sung on the terraces. It was a real football song for real football fans.
Kevin Sayer, England

'We're on the Ball' is wicked and I believe that it's just a bit better than 'Three Lions'. It's a great song and is easy to sing along to. The 1990 World Cup with John Barnes rapping was pretty amazing too.
Mike, England

The Ant and Dec song is a load of junk, and all the travelling England fans are going to be singing Three Lions. If you're going to release a song it's got to be something fans will chant in the stands, not some sort of pop song.
Steven Quinney, England

This song sets new standards for mediocrity. A Geordie Cockney anthem! Who wants to hear that? I'd rather hear Johnny Vegas (and the Monkey) doing 'Don't cry for me Argentina'!
Gary Rudd, England

Would either of these two have made the final of Pop Idol? What would Simon and the panel make of them? Bring back Trevor and Simon.
Susan Rudd, England

It'll be a hit and beat that stupid Will Young. Vindaloo was the best song!
Anne-Marie, England

Ant and Dec's new song is the BEST! It is better than all the other footy anthems - I love it! I can't wait to hear EVERYONE singing it at the World Cup!
Neha, Cambridge

What we've seen in the last decade is a compete change in what a football song means to a fan. I'm not knocking World in Motion at all - it was a brilliant piece of music. I loved the track but the fans couldn't relate to it. The fact is that nobody sang it on the terraces.

With that line of "it's coming home, its coming home, it's coming, football's coming home!" at Euro 96 spelled a difference. That's what made the difference in song culture at football grounds. Everyone could relate to it.

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem Ant and Dec's effort is as classy as New Order or Baddiel, Skinner and the Lightning Seeds, but we'll see how it goes!
A Chowdhury, UK

My favourite World Cup song is Work of Heaven from Padi. Because its lyric have a magic power. I really love that song.
Nisa, Indonesia

That has to be, and I mean this with no offence to the legendary Ant and Dec, the WORST song, World Cup or otherwise, EVER.
Tomahawk, England

I think it's fantastic, they sing it really well and they are both gorgeous.
Stacey Longley, England

I think your new song is wicked IIIIIIIIIIIIII.
Joe Duffy, England

PANTS! Reheat an old Arsenal anthem, add two Geordie nitwits in daft costumes, and what have you got? Sweet FA! There's never been a good World Cup song yet, Three Lions was Euro '96! But if you want to hear one, then ask your local DJ to play 'He's got Goldenballs' by V-for-Victory!
Garyrudd, England

As usual, the FA has chosen badly for the song

It's a good job they're not picking the team, presumably they'd have Paul Gascoigne, in goal! And David Batty taking penalties! What is this terrible dirge? An old Arsenal song sung by a couple of nitwits! Who are the FA kidding? I was really looking forward to the World Cup, but will now have to listen to it in silence for fear of inadvertantly being subjected to this drivel.
J Theakstone, England

Classic!
Peter Gahan, England

ENGLETARRE - say no more. Much better than those sycophantic songs that you've put on there!
Adam Krupa, England

Why not use an original bit of music for the anthem. As usual, the FA has chosen badly for the song. Fortunately it just gives the likes of Goldenballs a better chance! Cracking song!
Paul Emmett, England

I refer you to 'Golden Balls', that's our favourite World Cup song - original, catchy, original, supported by Chris Tarrant, and above all ORIGINAL.
Alan Tuplin, Lincs

The new song isn't very good...I say bring back Three Lions!
Ross Partridge, England

Oh come on, it's got to be Three Lions, everyone knows the words and if you're at a England match and the song comes on it's amazing, a great sight! All the flags flying, people singing it, oh come on, it's the best!!
Matt Connor England, England

Danny, England

The FA should stick to what they do best which is certainly not music. Once again they've picked an absolute dud.
Julian Sharples, UK

Baddiel and Skinner were by far the best ever, ever, ever. No one can beat it except them. BRING THEM BACK NOW. England will still win the World Cup!
Charlie, England

I think that England should simply adopt 'Bridge on the River Kwai' as their theme song. No words needed, just whistle.
Walter Blair, Canada

"Three Lions" is easily the best. Just remember the atmosphere at Wembley when we played Germany in Euro 96. It's a great football song!!
Danny, England

It's going to be difficult to beat Three Lions for quality of lyrics and melody - even Mozart would have struggled.
Huw Marks, England

Why didn't Ant and Dec stay out of the recording studio. We need a good band like Travis/Sterophonics or even Oasis to make a original tune, not a remake of a football team's effort.
Gavin McCabe, England

English World Cup songs are generally very good, they are closely connected with passion and love for beautiful game. In Serbia we have had several songs for our 98 World cup participation, and only one was good.
Bogdan Kotarlic, Serbia

I reckon this song's gonna be a HUGE hit because it's really catchy and has a great rhythm. I can imagine everyone singing along to it at England's matches. I certainly will be!
Chantal, England

Yay, another great World Cup song, Ant and Dec are fantastic. I hear a few of you don't agree, just wait, in a few weeks you will all be singing it! Before this song the best was Three Lions - so catchy!!
Anna Woodcock, England

Just heard the Rider song 'England Crazy'. It's the best football song I've ever heard. Really anthemic, it's going to be huge. Aparantly Terry Venables sings on the track. It's so good!! As for Ant and Dec. Oh dear, oh dear!!
Anika Betz, England

I've just heard the Rider track England Crazy, the one where Tel's singing the B-side, and it's brilliant!! Puts Ant and Dec's to shame - it's a shocker of a song.
Russell Mumford, UK

I'm not a big fan of 'Three Lions' but 'World in Motion' is a classic. It can even stand on its own as a good tune, never mind a belting football song. Every time I hear it played it reminds me of the hot summer of 1990!
ER, N Ireland

Yet again the FA has chosen a dud, just as they did in 1998. This leaves the door open for someone else.
Simon Lee, UK

Andy Cameron's "We're on the march with Ally's Army" was the all time classic World Cup song. It's just a pity our football never lives up to the quality of our songs!
Duncan Harvie, Scotland

Paul Brockbank, England

'England's Irie' by Black Grape was awesome, and Colourbox did a nice theme song ages ago. However, it has to be World in Motion. The rap is a bit cringe-worthy, but the "We're singing for England...Eng-Ger-Land!" bit still makes the spine tingle when played loud after an England victory! Come on lads.
Dan, UK

'World In Motion,' 'vindaloo' and 'Three Lions' made the pride swell inside of you, I very much doubt that Ant and Dec's song will do that!
Jason, Manchester, England

It's nice to see that with half the country's clubs on the verge of bankruptcy, the FA has both time and money to spend on garbage like this.
Stuart Goodacre, UK

The thing I can't believe is that someone's had four years to look for this song. Come on Fat Les, we're not all 'On Top of the World' because of this song - we need something to really set our 'World in Motion'!
Andrew , Hull, England

There have only ever been two England anthems, New Order, 'World in Motion' and 'Three Lions'. Ant and Dec are not only annoying, but the song is just not inspiring. They should stick to entertaining 10 year olds.
Paul Brockbank, England

As a kid, 'World In Motion' had a huge impact on me. It's a classic - and with Barnes' rap spurring on the boys we didn't do badly now did we?
Gareth Hunt, England

'World in Motion' was just a classic song - memorable for John Barnes' rap and Keith Allen's animated video. It caught the theme perfectly for Italia '90.

My old favourite was 'Ron's 22.' Watching the likes of Keegan and co mime the words on TOTP was about as coherent as their football was on the pitch. Didn't Black Grape have a record in Euro 1996 which I seem to remember as being very good?
Tony Morton, England

Darius from 'Popstars' could have done a better job than these two Geordie pretenders. Who's doing the next one - B'witched? Or maybe we could get hold of that woman who became famous from that documentary on the cruise ship.
Tom Hollett, England (via USA)

Oh dear. In a brief period during the 90s it looked like England football songs had dragged themselves out of the 'naff chant' category into the 'quite cool indie' arena. Unfortunately, it seems England songs have gone retro on us. Let's just hope the football's better!
Tim Gilkison, (Englishman in) Hong Kong

This song carries on a long tradition of terrible official songs. Let's wait and see which of the unofficial songs gets into our heads and refuses to leave.

For me, 'Three Lions' was the best of all the songs. It nicely evoked the fans' feeling of frustration at the time. It was also by far the easiest to sing on the terraces, and I have even heard it on the terraces here in Germany.
Michael Bond, Germany (Brit abroad)

It sounds like a good one for the World Cup, but you'll struggle to beat 'Three Lions'. I think that 'World in Motion' from Italia '90 is easily the best!
Alistair Batchelor, England

Fat Les! The song represents the true England!
Michael Blackwell, England

From what I have heard so far of Ant & Dec's footie song I won't be singing it. I think we have just been re-visited by PJ & Duncan, which is never a good thing. 'Three Lions' is the classic, get up and go footie song!
Jason, England

I think the most appropriate song would be YMCA as it is vibrant and makes me laugh
Mike Quaye, UK

Just heard the clip, and well, um, no, I don't think so!
Lazrigus, UK

I liked 'World in Motion' because it started with the '66 closing commentary. I also liked the John Barnes sequence. 'Vindaloo' was definitely better than the Spice Girls' song. I like the clip of the Ant and Dec song, but we'll see what the others have to offer.
Yvonne Lee, USA (via England)

I still think Three Lions was a classic and they should re-release it over and over. Everyone knows the words, it's instantly recognisable and an awe inspiring anthem
Nathan B, England
