'Tiger' feat
BBC Sport Online takes a look at the latest quirky stories doing the rounds in the build-up to the World Cup.

Easy, Tiger

England right-back Danny Mills has earned the nickname 'Tiger' because of his golfing skills.

The accolade was bestowed on him by the director of the Nine Bridge Golf Resort on Jeju Island, where the squad were staying before moving on to Japan.

The players took time off from training to squeeze in a round or two and it was Mills rather than seven-handicapper Michael Owen who stole the show.

The director said the Leeds star had the most natural game of all the England players.

Pity the same can't be said of his football.

Brazil's lay-in

Civil servants in Brazil have been told they do not have to work until mid-day during the World Cup.

The good news came direct from President Fernando Henrique Cardoso, who is keen for the whole country to get behind the team.

Brazil's matches kick off at 0300, 0600 and 1800 local time, so the normal working day has been changed from 1000-1700 to noon-1900.

Presumably it will suddenly become 0600-1900 if the Samba Boys make an early exit.

Silent treatment

Italy's players have boycotted the singing of their national anthem after being accused of not knowing the words.

Midfielder Gennaro Gattuso said the squad was reacting to a campaign putting pressure on them to belt out the song for the TV cameras.

"We all know the words. We sing the anthem every day, even two or three times a day when we are in the team bus," Gattuso insisted.

"But we have decided not to sing on the field, it is a question of pride," the AC Milan star added.

At least if the Italians go a long way in the tournament, no-one can accuse them of only singing when they're winning.

Barthez Blanc-ed

Fabien Barthez has been feeling a little put out because his kissing partner has not been returning his calls.

He hasn't called, he hasn't written...

No, not Linda Evangelista, Laurent Blanc - who famously planted a smacker on the bald one's bonce before every France game at the last World Cup.

Barthez said he has been desperately trying to ring his Manchester United team-mate, but no-one is answering.

"I think he must have switched his phone off," Barthez told reporters. "If any of you get through to him," tell him to call me.

It sounds like Blanc is giving him the kiss-off.
