Turkey 3-0 China

Turkey booked their place in the last 16 of the World Cup with a comfortable victory over China.

Three points from this victory in combination with Costa Rica's heavy defeat to Brazil mean that Turkey squeeze through on goal difference.

Two early goals from Hasan Sas and Bulent Korkmaz gave Turkey a comfortable cushion in a lively match in Seoul.

The second-half dismissal of China's Shao Jiayi smoothed Turkey's passage and Umit Davola's clinical late strike sealed victory.

The fact that they were dependent upon events elsewhere eased the pressure on the Turks, especially once they had established an early lead and they turned in a professional performance to do what they had to.

MATCH FACTS
6 mins: Hasan Sas fires Turkey ahead
9 mins: Bulent Korkmaz's looping header gives Turkey a two-goal cushion
84 mins: Umit Davala seals victory with a sweet strike

Although China had already had to book their flights home, they still had pride to play for.

In particular, Bora Milutinovic's side were aiming to score their first World Cup goal in what was his last match in charge.

This ensured an open match with both teams pushing forward looking for goals right from the off, Hakan Sukur going close in the opening seconds.

And after just six minutes, Umit Davala's quick free-kick to the edge of the penalty area caused a mix-up in China's defence and Hasan Sas pounced with a low strike into the corner of the net.

GRAPHIC ANALYSIS

Three minutes later, Bulent Korkmaz's looping header caught China's goalkeeper Jiang Jin off his line with Hakan Sukur on hand to ensure the ball crossed the line.

China were poor in defence but looked enterprising moving forward with Yang Chen especially eye-catching.

Yang Chen could not believe he did not score
He was unlucky not to open China's World Cup goal account half-way through the first half when he lashed Hao Haidong's cross against the post.

China refused to give in and came out for the second half still determined to attack.

However, just six minutes into the second period, half-time substitute Shao Jiayi was sent off for scraping his studs down Emre Belozoghe's calf.

From then on, China were on the back foot and Turkey had several chances to increase their lead before Umit Davala met Hakan Sus' deep left-footed cross with a firm low volley.

Turkey may have reached the second stage of the World Cup but there are clouds on the horizon.

Goalkeeper Rustu Recber limped off with the recurrence of a hamstring injury and Emre Asik and Emre Belozoglu both picked up yellow cards which will see them suspended for the next game.

And there is no end in sight to the goal drought of their captain and talisman Hakan Sukur, illustrated when he missed a sitter at the very end of the game.
