Claudio Caniggia's dream of playing in another World Cup finals ended in ignominy on Wednesday as he was red-carded while still on the substitutes' bench during Argentina's 1-1 draw with Sweden.
That result means the Argentines are out and the Rangers striker, having missed the first two games through injury, failed to play any part.
His dismissal came about in first-half injury time after referee Ali Bujsaim penalised Argentina.
The 35-year-old forward, who fought his way back into the squad despite not featuring in the qualifying games, complained vociferously from the sidelines.
The referee told him to sit down and when he continued to berate the Emirati official, he was shown the red card.
There was better news for Caniggia's Old Firm rivals, Swedes Henrik Larsson and Johan Mjallby.
The pair both played in the draw with Argentina that took Sweden through to the last 16 as the top team in Group F.
They will play Senegal for a place in the quarter-finals, while pre-tournament favourites Argentina head home along with champions France.
