Turkey's golden delight
Substitute Ilhan scored Turkey's golden goal against Senegal

Senegal 0-1 Turkey (golden goal)

Turkey's Ilhan Mansiz scored the decisive goal in the fourth minute of extra-time to book his team's semi-final encounter with Brazil.

It was a superb strike by the substitute in an otherwise mediocre contest - and just reward for a team who showed more desire and ambition.

GRAPHIC ANALYSIS
In only their second ever World Cup finals Senol Gunes' team have now exceeded all expectations by reaching the last four.

The match lacked verve, shape, skill and a sense of drama that one has the right to expect from a World Cup quarter-final.

However, neither side can take much pride from their performance.

Senegal seemed completely devoid of the refreshing enthusiasm that characterised their play earlier in the tournament.

Turkey at least tried to move forward with purpose only to be betrayed by a lack of quality and composure at the crucial moment.

And Gunes' team will have to vastly improve on their quarter-final display if they are to terminate Brazil's seemingly unstoppable progress to the final.

Turkey, though, can take heart from their opening match of the tournament, when they took the lead against Brazil before slipping to a narrow 2-1 defeat.

After a quiet opening to the match - with both teams trying to get the measure of each other in their first ever meeting - Senegal began to threaten.

And they were extremely unlucky not to score after 19 minutes.

Khalilou Fadiga's shot from a wide angle was unquestionably goalbound but struck one of his own players - Henri Camara - two yards from goal.

Camara managed to kick the ball in the net but the goal was ruled out because he was off-side when the Fadiga's shot struck him.

But after resisting Senegal's early advances, Hakan Sukur should have scored for Turkey.

The Parma striker, struggling for form and short on confidence, dismally failed to mis-control a straightforward square ball from Hasan Sas.

Sukur was unmarked and only 10 yards from goal - it was a golden opportunity terribly wasted.

Goal-line clearance

Minutes later Sukur failed to reached a dangerous cross whipped a cross the face of goal when even the slightest of contacts would have resulted in a goal.

And then with half-time looming Yildiray Basturk appeared to have headed home Sas' exquisitely weighted through-ball only for Omar Daf to brilliantly clear off the line.

After the interval, Turkey continued to push forward and Lamine Diatta did well to block Basturk's powerful shot.

But Sukur continued to spurn half-chances and was replaced by Ilhan Mansiz after 69 minutes.

Ilhan almost defeated Tony Sylva with an audacious lob with 20 minutes left but as full-time loomed the game became increasingly scrappy and shapeless.

Senegal offered little except for long-range efforts from Salif Diao and El Hadji Diouf.

Almost inevitably the match lurched into extra-time.

But after just four minutes Ilhan Mansiz brilliantly hooked Umit Davala's cross past Sylva to spark scenes of Turkish joy - but end Senegal's courageous World Cup journey.
