62 mins: South Africa reduce the deficit to one goal. Teboho Mokoena fires in a harmless shot but his goal is deflected past Ricardo Tavarelli in the Paraguay goal by midfielder Estanisiao Struway for an own goal. Paraguay 2-1 South Africa

59 mins: Paraguay are defending with 10 men behind the ball as South Africa search for an equaliser.

55 mins: Roque Santa Cruz is fouled. Francisco Arce shapes to cross the resulting free-kick but fires in an unstoppable shot on goal to extend Paraguay's lead. Paraguay 2-0 South Africa.

52 mins: South Africa striker Sibusiso Zuma fires in a long range effort but his shot flies harmlessly over the goal.

50 mins: The Paraguay defence look unusually flustered as they struggle to clear the ball to safety. South Africa have started the second half with much more purpose.

47 mins: Paraguay defender Carlos Gamarra makes a forceful run, shooting from just inside the area, but his effort to the keeper's left is just wide of the post.

46 mins: South Africa's MacDonald Mukansi breaks down the right flank and puts in a dangerous cross. Sibusiso Zuma volleys spectacularly but fails to make decent contact and Ricardo Tavarelli saves comfortably.

41 mins: Roque Santa Cruz is again denied by another fine save from Ricardo Tavarelli who saves the striker's close range header. Paraguay are beginning to assert their authority on this match.

38 mins: From the resulting free-kick Roque Santa Cruz opens the scoring, heading in at the back post from Franciso Arce's ball. Paraguay 1-0 South Africa.

37 mins: South African defender Lucas Radebe picks up the second yellow card of the game for downing Roberto Acuna.

37 mins: Celso Ayala makes a brave defensive header to deny South Africa's Santa Cruz.

34 mins: Paraguay's Julio Cesar Caceres receives the first yellow card of the game for a late challenge on Jabu Pule.

32 mins: Despite creating the better chances, Paraguay have only seen 39% of the action compared to South Africa's 61% of possession.

30 mins: Another testing cross from Paraguay's Jorge Campos. Roque Santa Cruz gets in front of his defender but Ricardo Tavarelli saves from close range.

26 mins: South Africa make their first substitution. MacDonald Mukansi comes on for fellow striker Pierre Issa, who has picked up a leg injury.

25 mins: A teasing corner from Francisco Arce causes a mix up in the South Africa defence. Paraguay keeper Ricardo Tavarelli saves on the line and then manages to safely gather up the loose ball.

21 mins: Roque Santa Cruz again causes trouble for the South Africa defence, sending a teasing ball across the face of the goal. Luckily for South Africa, there are no other Paraguay players in the area.

20 mins: Teboho Mokoena shoots from outside of the box but his tame shot fails to trouble Ricardo Tavarelli in the Paraguay goal.

19 mins: A deep cross from Paraguay's Jorge Campos on the left-hand side but Roque Santa Cruz is only inches away from making contact. Bradley Cornell clears the ball to safety.

15 mins: Quinton Fortune again causes Paraguay trouble down the left side. His cross is cut out by Paraguay defender Carlos Gamarra.

11 mins: Sibusiso Zuma fires in an inviting cross from the right but strike partner Benni McCarthy is unable to reach the ball in time and Ricardo Tavarelli safely gathers the ball.

7 mins: South Africa win the first corner of the game, but Quinton Fortune's delivery goes straight into the hands of Paraguay keeper Ricardo Tavarelli.

3 mins: South Africa's Macbeth Sibaya tests the keeper from outside the area, but his shot whistles just wide of the post.

1 min: A moment of controversy with only 21 seconds gone when Roque Santa Cruz appears to be brought down by South Africa keeper Andre Arendse when free on goal. But the referee waves play on.

0830 BST: Paraguay get the opening Group B match underway.
