Clockwatch: England 0-0 Nigeria

All the action from Osaka.

0920 BST: The final whistle blows. England are through to the second round - despite a poor display. But, with Sweden and Argentina drawing 1-1, they will finish second in the group and will play Denmark at 1230 on Saturday.

Argentina, one of the pre-tournament favourites, have sensationally followed France out of the World Cup at the first hurdle.

90 mins: One minute of over-time will be played.

89 mins: As England enter the last minute of normal time, they are unable to win possession.

87 mins: More excellent defensive play from Rio Ferdinand, who cleans up as Julius Aghahowa drifts into the area.

86 mins: News comes through that Argentina have equalised. But if England can hang on they will still go through, with Sweden winning the group.

85 mins: Free-kick to England, 30 yards out on the left. David Beckham's low shot goes through the wall and both Trevor Sinclair and Darius Vassell fail to connect with the ball.

84 mins: England's third substitution. Wayne Bridge replaces Ashley Cole at left-back.

83 mins: Nigeria appeal for a penalty as Julius Aghahowa goes down under Danny Mills' challenge. But the referee waves play on. 81 mins: A poor pass from Teddy Sheringham goes straight to keeper Vincent Enyeama.

80 mins: Another good run by Ashley Cole earns England a throw in the corner. Trevor Sinclair crosses - but Darius Vassell is unable to reach the ball.

77 mins: David Beckham's long-range shot is hit straight at a defender as England look increasingly impatient.

76 mins: England's second substiution. Darius Vassell replaces Michael Owen.

76 mins: Teddy Sheringham's long shot is just wide of the goal.

75 mins: England waste a glorious chance. Ashley Cole does well on the left and crosses into the middle. The ball ricochets off Michael Owen and falls to Teddy Sheringham - but he skies the ball over the bar.

73 mins: England claim a free-kick as Trevor Sinclair is fouled on the edge of the area. But rather than Beckham take a shot, Paul Scholes bizarrely takes a quick set-piece - and the ball is lost to the Nigeria defence. A wasted opportunity.

71 mins: Free-kick to Nigeria as Sol Campbell fouls Benedict Akwuegbu 35 yards from goal. But Joseph Yobo shoots wide.

70 mins: Paul Scholes sprints to the edge of the Nigeria area but loses the ball in the tackle.

69 mins: Free-kick to Nigeria as Nicky Butt raises his foot to Benedict Akwuegbu. But David Seaman races off his line to collect the through-ball.

68 mins: England substitution. Teddy Sheringham replaces Emile Heskey up front.

67 mins: David Seaman collects James Obiorah's searching cross at full stretch.

66 mins: Trevor Sinclair breaks down the left - but his cross does not reach Emile Heskey. Nicky Butt tries a shot from 25 yards - but it goes wide.

65 mins: Benedict Akwuegbu runs at England, but his shot is straight at Seaman.

64 mins: Corner to Nigeria on their left. But the cross is over-hit and Michael Owen cleans up.

63 mins: Another England free-kick, 30 yards out. But David Beckham again sends his shot well over the bar.

62 mins: Free-kick for England as Sodje fouls Owen to end a swift break, launched by Beckham's long cross-field ball. Beckham plays the set-piece into the area - the loose ball falls to Nicky Butt, but he is unable to get a proper contact with his shot.

60 mins: David Beckham tries a back-heel flick on the edge of the area - but he fails to find a team-mate and Nigeria clear.

59 mins: News comes through that Sweden have taken a 1-0 lead against Argentina. If the scores stay as they are, Sweden will win the group, England will finish second - and Argentina will go out.

58 mins: Emile Heskey crosses from the right - and Michael Owen is inches away from connecting with the ball and scoring the opening goal.

57 mins: Superb defending from Rio Ferdinand, who cuts across Julius Aghahowa as the Nigerian player sprints into the area onto a long ball.

55 mins: England free-kick as Trevor Sinclair is fouled 30 yards from goal. David Beckham shoots - but his curling effort drifts over the goal on the left.

0834 BST: England kick off at the start of the second half.

45 mins (+1): The half-time whistle blows after one minute of over-time. England have settled down after a nervous opening - but Nigeria, who are already out of the tournament, will be pleased with their first-half display.

44 mins: England continue their best period of the match. Emile Heskey heads over the bar from a corner on the right.

43 mins: More pressure from England, who are suddenly shooting on sight. Paul Scholes tries his luck from 25 yards - but his excellent shot is superbly saved by Vincent Enyeama, who touches it onto his left-hand post. The ball rebounds to safety.

42 mins: Sinclair lays the ball off to Danny Mills on the edge of the area - but he drags his shot wide of the target.

41 mins: Ashley Cole breaks into the Nigeria box but hits his cross straight at Jay Jay Okocha.

33 mins: Danny Mills heads for a corner after Benedict Akwuegbu sends over a searching cross from the right. England clear.

31 mins: Free-kick to England 30 yards out. David Beckham's under-hit shot causes no trouble for Vincent Enyeama.

29 mins: Free-kick to Nigeria just outside the England area. Jay Jay Okocha whips in a shot, which is straight at David Seaman. But the goalkeeper fails to hold the shot and the ball bounces to Julius Aghahowa. But, under pressure from Sol Campbell, he prods the ball wide.

28 mins: Ashley Cole fouls Efe Sodje on Nigeria's right.

Eriksson keeps faith with Emile Heskey up front, while Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes are again paired in central midfield.

Joe Cole, who was unavailable for the Argentina match, is back on the bench for this game.

Nigeria make five changes to their team, following their 2-1 defeat by Sweden.

Chelsea defender Celestine Babayaro and Taribo West are both dropped, while Arsenal's Kanu is sidelined with an ankle problem.

Nineteen-year-old Vincent Enyeama replaces Ike Shorunmu in goal while Crewe's Efe Sodje, Benedict Akwuegbu, James Obiorah and Femi Opabunmi all came in.

Conditions are expected to favour the African team, with humidity in the stadium at about 30%.
